Development – Northern Mindanao (CHD-NM), six (6) cases of pertussis have been recorded across Northern Mindanao within the first 12 weeks from January 1 to March 23, 2024.
The update from Radyo Pilipinas indicates no fatalities among the six confirmed cases, all involving infants below one-year-old who have not been vaccinated.
The Department of Health (DOH) anticipates the arrival of one million doses of pertussis vaccine in June to address the situation.
Nationwide, the total reported cases of pertussis have reached 568 as of March 16, 2024, posing a significant public health concern.
Pertussis is a highly contagious respiratory illness transmitted through coughing or sneezing, affecting the lungs and airways, leading to severe bouts of coughing followed by difficulty breathing.
