Cotabato City, Philippines [September 20, 2024] – The Transportation and Communications Committee of the Bangsamoro Transition Authority (BTA) Parliament approved a resolution encouraging local government units to implement regulations concerning unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), remotely piloted aircraft, and drones.

Highlighting the dangers of unregulated drone usage in the region, as well as unmanned aerial vehicles and remotely piloted aircraft, BTA Floor Leader and Minister of the Ministry of Interior and Local Government (MILG) Sha Elijah Dumama-Alba, the author of the resolution, emphasized the need for regulatory measures.

Bangsamoro Airport Authority Manager Johari Musa emphasized the urgency of establishing a regulatory framework, noting the lack of drone regulations in BARMM communities.

The proposal includes the establishment of a system related to licensing and permits to be overseen by the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) and the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA).

The Police Regional Office Bangsamoro Autonomous Region recommended that local governments consider implementing a registration process for all UAVs at the municipal level. Drone operators must seek approval from the Philippine National Police and the respective LGUs.

Chairman Baileng Mantawil of the Committee on Transportation and Communications stated the committee's plan to engage with provincial governments to discuss the adopted resolution further.
