Albay - Mayon Volcano in Albay province erupted in a phreatic explosion yesterday afternoon, as confirmed by the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS).
According to reports from Radyo Pilipinas, the ash plume has reached a height of 1,200 meters from the volcano's crater. Dr. Paul Alanis, PHIVOLCS Resident Volcanologist, stated that the ash was dispersed towards the southwest portion of the volcano, specifically affecting the towns of Daraga, Camalig, and Guinobatan due to the prevailing wind direction.
Given the abnormality recorded yesterday, this kind of volcanic activity is expected, prompting PHIVOLCS to raise its alert level to 2.
Alanis emphasized in the report that even without an alert level, such events can occur, and no signs indicate their onset.
